In the fall of 2011, the Volkswagen lineup was replenished with a new model - an urban compact, named Up. In 2016, a restyled version of the model debuted in Geneva, which received a more modern and adult look, an improved interior, as well as an expanded list of equipment and a new engine.

At the end of 2016, information appeared on the network that the manufacturer intends to release a special "charged" version of the compact, and a few months later, within the framework of the annual GTI festival, Volkswagen showed a serial version of the Volkswagen Up GTI.

As the manufacturer himself notes, the novelty is the ideological successor to the first generation VW Golf GTI, presented back in 1976.

You can distinguish the "heated" version from the usual Volkswagen Up by a different external design, original rims, reconfigured suspension and an upgraded power plant.

Exterior VW Up GTI

The charged VW Up, like its civilian version, has a stylish and attractive appearance, while in the GTI version, the manufacturer tried to make the car more aggressive.

"Muzzle" of a compact hatchback flaunts a fairly large head optics with LED sections of running lights, a refined false radiator grille with a branded red stripe and a "GTI" nameplate, as well as a stylish front bumper with a pair of air intake sections, a kind of splitter and round fog lights.

Vehicle profile showcases heavily piled A-pillars, pumped-up wheel arches, large side doors, a billowing window line, and original 17-inch wheels. In addition, it is worth highlighting the presence of GTI nameplates on the front fenders, a small rear spoiler and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Car feed pleasing to the eye with vertical side lights, a compact tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper with a pair of built-in foglights and a pseudo-diffuser. As on the front of the body, there is a branded red stripe and a GTI nameplate at the back.

The external dimensions of the novelty have the following parameters:

Length, mm3600
Width, mm1641
Height, mm1478
Wheel base, mm2410
Ground clearance, mm130

In comparison with the civilian version of Up, its charged version received a 15 mm lower ground clearance and is 130 mm, which made it possible to improve the aerodynamic properties and controllability of the car, which in this parameter is very close to racing maps. In any case, this is what the manufacturer says.

The choice of future owners was offered 7 options for color design, among which three colors are combined.

Interior decoration UP GTI

The Volkswagen Up GTI salon, traditionally for the German brand, pleases with high-quality assembly, solid (albeit budget) finishing materials and well-calibrated ergonomics - all the controls and switches are exactly where you expect them to be.

In front of the driver there is a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, sportingly truncated at the bottom and supplemented with red stitching, as well as a stylish instrument panel, where the dominant place is reserved for a large tachometer dial, where a small trip computer display is also inscribed.

In the central part of the dashboard, the manufacturer placed the climate system, surrounded by several auxiliary buttons, and right below it - a multimedia system unit, which can optionally be supplemented with a small display and navigation.

First row passengers the manufacturer offered comfortable chairs with original upholstery and a sufficient number of adjustments. True, despite the "charge" of the car, the seats cannot boast of pronounced lateral support.

In addition to the front seats, the compact hatchback has back sofa, providing comfortable accommodation for children and adolescents. True, if a short trip is ahead, then a couple of adult riders will be able to sit in the back.

Trunk volume in the classic layout it is 251 liters, but if you lower the back of the rear sofa, then you can count on a volume of 951 liters, and when folded, the back row forms a flat loading area.

Despite its compactness, there is a place in the trunk for a repair kit and an optional spare wheel, which are located under the raised floor.

Also, speaking of the salon, one cannot fail to mention the possibility of connecting a smartphone to a multimedia center, as a result of which all kinds of technical graphics can be displayed on a mobile device. True, in addition to synchronizing with the auto system, the user is required to download a special application.

Specifications Volkswagen Up GTI 2018

The new VW Up GTI is powered by a 1-liter three-cylinder TSI turbo petrol engine, which has been boosted to 115 hp. and 200 Nm of peak torque available in the 2000-3500 rpm range.

For comparison, the usual Up is equipped with a similar motor, but with a power of 90 hp. and a peak thrust of 160 Nm. According to the developer, the increase in power became possible thanks to the use of an increased pressure turbine.

The motor is coupled with an uncontested 6-speed "mechanics" providing acceleration from 0 to 100 in 8.8 seconds, while the car accelerates from 0 to 80 km / h in 5.8 seconds. The maximum speed that the little car can reach is 196 km / h, and the average fuel consumption is stated at 4.8 l / 100 km. In the city and on the highway, the Volkswagen Up consumes an average of 6 and 4.1 liters of fuel, respectively.

The "heated" Up is based on the front-wheel drive "bogie" NWS (aka PQ12), which assumes a transverse arrangement of the power plant and the presence of a monocoque body, in which the proportion of high-strength steel reaches 75%.

The design of the applied suspension is typical for most cars of the subcompact class - an independent system with MacPherson struts on the front axle and a semi-independent structure with a torsion beam on the rear axle.

Unlike the regular version, the GTI modification received different, more sporty, suspension settings, which, together with the reduced ground clearance, made it possible to achieve more precise and sharp control.

Steering city hatchback supplemented by an electromechanical amplifier, and ventilated 280-mm disc mechanisms of the front wheels and 228-mm drum-type brakes on the rear axle are responsible for braking.
